Fargesia robusta 'Wolong'

Max/Avg Height (ft.): 16, 12

Diameter: 0.75 inch

Hardiness: 0° F

USDA Zones: 7-9, Not recommended for climates with a lot of intense heat or high summer humidity (including most of the southern USA)

Fargesia robusta 'Wolong' has larger leaves than regular F. robusta which lend this clumping bamboo a tropical look. The foliage is a shiny dark green that seems to shimmer in the sunlight. Branch sheaths often have hints of orange and red. New shoots are hairy and rusty red upon emergence from the ground in early spring. It is more sun tolerant than most other Fargesia, but ideally would prefer protection from the hot afternoon sun. It is reported to get taller than other types of F. robusta in it's native climate, the high elevation mountains of Sichuan, China. Our plants in the ground are over 9 feet tall after four years. This rare bamboo makes a fine garden specimen or privacy screen, without the unwanted spreading habits of the taller Phyllostachys.
