This bamboo has unique form and texture and is the shortest variation of the diverse species C. culeou. It is a compact bamboo with tiny leaves and short branches, giving it a very tufted, upright appearance. Leaves are a nice, wintergreen color. It has shown very promising hardiness at our nursery when compared to other C. culeou seedlings growing in the same vicinity (survived 10° F without any significant damage to the foliage). Seed originally collected by Hillier Nursery in the UK from a flowering mother plant that presumably came from Chile. All seedlings from this parent plant showed very similar characteristics, and are distinctly different from other variations of C. culeou. 'Hillier' is still rare and in limited production, but it has certainly earned a place in our collection.
