This medium-size bamboo produces quantities of strong straight
culms. The common name in Japanese is Medake, meaning "Woman Bamboo,"
presumably for its graceful appearance and elegant leaves. The canes
are popular for basketry.
'Variegatus' is a vigorous and variegated form of
Pleioblastus simonii.
This form is
rather unusual
with some leaves
variegated and
some not.
