Phyllostachys vivax
'Basinigra'
Common name: Black Spot Vivax
Maximum Height:
70 feet
Typical height in USA: 40 to 50 feet
Diameter: 3 to 5 inch canes
Hardiness: -5°
F
USDA Zone recommended 6 through 10
This unusual form of P. vivax develops
"Bory-like" coloration near the base of the culm. It is not as consistent as
Bory, but interesting, none the less, because of the large diameter culms
inherent to all forms of vivax. This is one of the plants we grew from the
seed we collected from the vivax at our old nursery in Milwaukie Oregon. It
was the first new bamboo variety originated at Bamboo Garden. P. nigra 'Bory'
and P. glauca
'Yunzhu' have similar variations, but each type looks unique in its own
way. (see comparison below)
